Three Sports Betting Bill Up For Discussion in Missouri for 2021 Session
State Sens. Caleb Rowden, Tony Luetkemeyer, and Denny Hoskins have filed bills to legalize sports betting featuring different tax rates and application fees. There are three 2021 bills for the legalization of VLTs. Presently, the state offers riverboat casinos, US online gambling, bingo gaming. According to the Missouri Gaming Association, the taxes and fees received from gaming is the fifth-largest revenue source for the state. The American Gaming Association reported that 13 riverboat casinos in Missouri have contributed to over $550 million in respect to gaming revenue in 2018.
After bills failed to move through 2019, Luetkemeyer and Hoskins filed for the legalization of sports betting in the 2020 session. Both their bills were made through the committee hearing prior to the spike of COVID-19 cases. Due to the pandemic legislature was forced to adjourn early. Hoskin, during the session, argues that the state could earn between $12.5 and $30.9 million as revenue annually if it legalized sports betting. He now added that in today’s time, this estimated revenue could stand anywhere between $37 million and $50 million. Hoskins added that he expects that the government will morph the bills into one which needs to be approved in order to gain the revenue generated by states where sports betting is legalized.
